This creates an urgent need to better understand how different sensory inputs affect the body and overall well-being. While it is known that both materials (such as textiles) and sound or music can influence how we feel, their combined effect on bodily experience has received little systematic attention. In particular, we lack knowledge about how multisensory environments—where materials and sound interact—can shape bodily perception and support states such as calmness and focus.

This project explores how textiles and sound together influence human bodily perception and subjective states. It adopts a creative research approach that combines design, music, and scientific inquiry. Multisensory prototypes will be developed and tested in three stages: first, material–sound combinations will be explored in a simplified, small-scale format; second, their effects will be studied in direct contact with the body; and third, they will be implemented in spatial environments where participants can engage with the experience as a whole. The research integrates participants’ self-reported experiences with qualitative, experience-based analysis to better understand how these multisensory interactions unfold.

The project will produce new knowledge about how multisensory stimuli shape bodily experience and well-being. This knowledge will be translated into practical design principles for creating multisensory environments and artefacts. The outcomes can be applied in areas such as wellbeing-oriented spaces, therapeutic contexts, design, and cultural events. By bridging creative practice and research, the project contributes to the development of sensorial design as an emerging field and lays the groundwork for future international collaboration and wider societal applications.

https://www.etis.ee/Portal/Projects/Display/fbd0d20c-7b59-47ed-b4cd-9d4192fe677e

In today’s increasingly complex living environments, people are exposed to growing levels of stress and sensory overload.
